THE PODCAST FOR TOURING MUSICIANS & PERFORMING ARTISTS

The Creation of the Indie Bible and the Useful Suite of Directories:

Searching for venues to play can be daunting. Creating an efficient tour is sometimes harder. Finding media review outlets to play and promote your music can be overwhelming.

That is why I am so excited to be speaking with David Wimble during this episode of the Get Great Gigs Podcast. You may be familiar with him as the creator of The Indie Bible and a few other directories that have been helping artists book and promote their gigs throughout the U.S., Canada and now around the world. So, get ready for my interview with David Wimble.

SHOW NOTES

David Wimble is a singer/songwriter from Canada who also publishes several music directories for independent artists. These directories were created to help artists connect with services that can help further their career and give their music valuable exposure. David’s flagship directory is the Indie Bible, now in its 21st Edition. Other directories include the Indie Venue Bible, The International Booking Agents Directory, The Indie Spotify Bible and the soon to be published Indie YouTube Bible. Links to all directories can be found at www.indiebible.com

Here are the highlights you’ll discover in my interview with David Wimble.

[01:48] He discusses his background and what led him to create the first volume of the Indie Bible. His discovery of the early stages of the Internet opened new opportunities. Listen to how he jumped in and transformed the info available into something usable for artists to begin marketing their music online.

[05:10] Here he reveals how the Indie Bible has evolved. He talks about how he needs to always be on the cutting edge of what people need and how he interprets the latest technology and adopts it in anticipation of the eventual needs.

[08:17] David peels back the curtain on how he gathers the information for all the directories and what sort of team does he has working with him.

[09:44] It seemed to me a logical next step from marketing resources was to move into booking resources and so he created the regional Indie Venue Bible Directories. He shares how that project come about and what was the process was he developed to gather all the information. As a musician, David looks for the listings in each directory, knowing what musicians are searching for.

[13:53] David describes how he details the genre categories for venues in the Indie Venue Bible, helping artists determine what venue is right for them.

[16:17] Here, he shares how this massive directory of over 30,000 venues became seven regional directories for North America.

[17:48] We discuss some of the ways he suggests artists use the Indie Venue Bible as they search for gigs to build their tours.

[21:41] He seems to have a sixth sense for creating the tools that musicians need just around the time they’ll start to need them. Now he is out in front with the Indie Spotify Directory. David talks about that directory and what led to creating it and what artists will find in it.

[29:23] Building on the Indie Venue Bible, David talks about the factors that led to creating the Booking Agent Directory.

[33:25] David talks about the Companion guides that accompany each directory. They include helpful articles and specific tips from industry professionals appropriate to the topic of each directory.

[38:37] David shares his appreciation for the users of the various directories as well as how appreciative the users are for the resource. In particular, the Indie Spotify Bible seems to be garnering high praise from users as they recognize the huge amount of detailed work that went into gathering the information.
